Why did John begin his Gospel by saying something so remarkable like “the Word was God” and then connect the Word to a person made of flesh living among us in this world? Most likely, he wanted to make it clear to us, that this person, referred to as the Word, is Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God. In the prologue, John wanted to ensure there was no confusion about the identity of this person by using a series of “I am” statements.
